Turnstone Tips: World Autism Awareness Day

Every year since 2007 on April 2nd we observe World Autism Awareness Day 🧩. The occasion is marked in order to raise awareness and promote acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder 🌈.

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder characterised by challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours 🧠. However, it’s important to recognise that autism is a spectrum, meaning individuals with autism can have a wide range of abilities and challenges 🔄.

What are some of the things you can be doing to foster understanding and acceptance of people with autism?

📚 Educate yourself. This will help you understand a wide range of behaviours and allow you to provide better support.

💬 Communicate clearly and concisely. This will help to minimise any potential confusion.

🌟 Consider sensory needs. Many people with autism struggle with sensitivity to light, noise and touch. Adjusting your behaviour to consider this will help people with autism to express themselves and flourish.

🔄 Routine and Goals. It’s important to set clear objectives and expectations in order to reduce uncertainty and anxiety. Providing a structured routine will help to create consistency and predictability and boost self-confidence.

🤝 Social situations. Social situations can often be a source of anxiety for people with autism. Therefore, it is important to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment to allow people with autism to build meaningful relationships.

👍 Be positive! It is vital that you provide positive reinforcement. Praise and encouragement go a long way to reduce anxiety and build confidence!

🌞It’s crucial to remember that individuals with autism, like everyone else, are unique individuals with valuable skills, talents, and perspectives to offer. By focusing on seeing the person beyond the diagnosis, we can foster a workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion. Providing opportunities for work for autistic people not only benefits the individuals themselves by empowering them to contribute meaningfully to society, but it also enriches the overall workplace environment by promoting innovation, creativity, and empathy. Embracing diversity and creating inclusive workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive is not just a moral imperative, but also a smart business decision that leads to greater success and fulfilment for all. 😊
