World Food Safety Day is being celebrated across the globe today, 7th June. This year’s theme is “Food Standards Save Lives”, which draws attention to the importance of food standards in protecting the population from foodborne illness👩‍🔬

Food safety refers to the practices that are observed during the handling, processing, storage and distribution of food to ensure that contaminants that can cause foodborne illnesses are not present🍴

Food safety is an important aspect of food production and handling as it ensures that the health and safety of consumers are protected from any food-related issues🧼

Food safety is a collective effort from all the members of the food supply chain👥

Why is food safety and standards important for businesses?🥼🥽

  • Foodborne diseases affect 1 in 10 people worldwide each year, so ensuring that we maintain a high level of food standards ensures that the food we produce and consume is safe to eat. Businesses must meet food safety standards and ensure that they control all biological, chemical and physical hazards present in their processes.
  • Food standards are the reason that people trust that everyone involved in growing, processing, packaging, distributing, and preparing their food, does so in the correct way to prevent us from becoming ill.
  • It is crucial for businesses to meet food standards in relation to allergens, maximum levels of additives, contaminations, pesticide residues, and veterinary drugs.
  • Complying with labelling standards is also crucial to ensure that consumers have the information that they need to make informed food choices.
