What is a Food Hygiene Rating?🍴

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme provides a rating from 0 to 5 to food businesses following a food hygiene inspection. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) runs the scheme in partnership with local councils who carry out the inspections.

Ratings are a representative of the standards of food hygiene found in the business at the time of inspection🕵️

Inspections will examine your level of compliance with food hygiene law, in particular:

  • Handling food hygienically – safe food preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage
  • Premises structure and condition – cleanliness, repair, layout, lighting, ventilation, and other facilities
  • Managing and documenting food safety – using a food safety management system such as the Food Standard Agency’s – Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) system.
