Women in Engineering Day 2023

International Women in Engineering Day is celebrated on 23^rd June each year around the world, to honour and celebrate the achievements of women in the engineering field. International Women in Engineering Day is also an opportunity to encourage girls to consider engineering as a possible career, which is critical to ensuring that the future demand for engineering is met and addressing the skills shortage of engineers across the world👷‍♀️🏗️

Engineering shapes the world and helps make our planet a better, safer, more innovative, and exciting place to be. Progression in the engineering field have given us the benefit of living easier lives, living in better homes, working in safe environments, constructing creative buildings & structures, and expanding technology, just to name a few.

Although the current number of higher educated women outnumber men, just 13% work in engineering, representing a major lack of diversity in the engineering industry👷‍♀️⚙️

The best way to celebrate women engineers is to fight for equal pay. Women in the field continue to suffer from abhorrent discrimination and the gender pay gap. This Women in Engineering Day, review the pay scales of male and female engineers within your organisation to ensure that it is fair and equal for all genders.
Speak to women engineers in your organisation, to find out how you could further support them and attract additional women into the organisation or industry. If it is feasible, offering to visit schools, colleges and universities to speak to students about engineering opportunities for women within your organisation can be a great way to open girls’ minds to considering engineering as a career path.
Spread the word. Why not make a short video of some women engineers in your organisation, if they are willing, to talk about both their positive experiences, and challenges within the engineering industry. This could be shared within the organisation to raise awareness of the value that women engineers bring to and organisation and the barriers that they often face with being underrepresented in the industry.
